THE ORIGINS OF NEUROFEEDBACK

Neurofeedback is a type of biofeedback that uses electroencephalography (EEG) to provide a signal that can be used by a person to receive feedback on brain activity.

Neurofeedback was created by a researcher named J. H. Bair who first came up with the successful experiment of autonomic biofeedback. It is originated from the idea of neuroscience which is the scientific study of nervous system and the principle of “neuroplasticity”.

Human brain contains more than 1000 millions of neurons and about 100 trillion of neural connections. Each neuron will conveys information to one another and to target cells. Chemical substances that assisted in the transmission are called neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters can be measured using devices and are shown in form of graphs known as brainwaves.

In 1924, a German psychiatrist, Hans Berger connected a couple of electrodes (small round discs of metal) to a patient's scalp and detected a small current by using a ballistic galvanometer. In 1929-1938, he published 14 reports about his studies of EEGs, and much of our modern knowledge of the subject, especially in the middle frequencies, is due to his research.Berger analyzed EEGs qualitatively, but in 1932, G. Dietsch applied Fourier analysis to seven records of EEG and became the first researcher of what later is known as QEEG (quantitative EEG). Later in 1958, Joseph Kamiya successfully trained individuals to control alpha waves. The frequency range of the alpha waves is between 8 to12 Hz which indicates the sign of relaxed activity in the brain.

In 1975, Joel Lubar applied neurofeedback on children with learning disabilities and the studies proved that children’s attention can be successfully enhanced.

Through the Korea Institute of Psychiatry, Dr. Park Pyong Woon has created a new device called NeuroHarmony which is now being used in most elementary schools in Korea to train students. NeuroHarmony, developed in Korea Research of Jungshin Science, known as 'Braintech' by Dr. Kim Yong Ki together with Dr. Park Pyong Woon on year 2001.
